Boulder Chamber Orchestra Newsletter

2008-2009: A Season of Success

Welcome to the third annual newsletter of the Boulder Chamber Orchestra. Five years have gone by. We are fortunate to have one of the best performing arts organizations in the state—thanks to all the hard work done by staff, volunteers, and generous patrons like you. Last season we broke barriers once again, by teaming up with internationally known artists such as Geraldine Walther, David Korevaar, Michael Thornton, Erika Eckert, Szilvia Schranz, and Andrew Cooperstock, all of whom elevated our performance to world-class standards. We also gave tickets to more than 600 under-resourced youth and elderly.

Because of community members like you, the BCO continues to be an organization dedicated to exceptional community involvement, outreach, and musical excellence.

2009-2010: A Symphonic Frolic

We are even more excited about our upcoming season! To celebrate our 6th year in existence, we have joined forces with some of the best musical talent, bringing you yet another season of sensational programming.

Our new season is “A Symphonic Frolic.” We will celebrate the eminence of dance, song, and folk music in the evolution of music. Every concert this season will include pieces made of musical frolic!

Throughout these six amazing concerts and two mini-chamber events, you will hear folk tunes from all over the world, including the Czech Republic, Turkey, Armenia, Austria, England, Germany, and even the United States.

We start the season with distinguished Israeli cellist Inbal Segev in a riveting performance of the virtuosic D-minor Cello Concerto by C.P.E Bach. This concert will include a string symphony by Mendelssohn, waltzes by Brahms ... and a tune from TV commercials!

In November 2009 we will join forces with Opus Two, an engaging duo consisting of CU keyboard department Chair, Andrew Cooperstock on piano and William Terwilliger on violin, performing a rare treat: Haydn’s Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Strings. This concert also includes a Concerto Grosso by Handel and the heartfelt Idyl by Czech composer Janacek.

In December, soprano celebrity Bonnie Draina will join the BCO for our holiday celebration with her rendition of Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate. The enchanting Suite Antique by English composer John Rutter, comprising folk songs from the UK, will bring further delight.

More folk melodies will be heard in February 2010 when we join Boulder clarinetist Jerome Fleg, who will perform Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto. This concert also features music by Turkish composer Komitas as well as one of Bahman’s favorite English pieces, Parry’s English Suite.

The final two concerts will put the icing on the cake with a repeat appearance by world-renowned violinist Lindsay Deutsch (now a BCO favorite!) in April and an all-Beethoven performance in May.

Starting on October 9, you will experience a musical journey like no other!

Your Support and Generosity Make It All Happen

During our last concert of the season we sold 34 season tickets by the end of the 15-minute intermission! Many of you tacked on additional donations at this time to help the BCO get to where it needs to be.

While season subscriptions mean everything to us, we would like to remind you that none of this is possible without your continual generous contributions and support outside of regular ticket purchases. Our ticket revenue covers less than 25% of our total annual expenses; your contributions along with grants and corporate donations make up the rest. In this era of tight federal and state budgets, cutbacks in spending, and rising costs, your help from the grassroots is our only hope for financial sustainability. We are committed to keeping our ticket prices low because we believe that this music is for all. Your dollars support not only our musicians but also those in need of musical experience or even just that extra outing with fellow elderly to make life a bit more fulfilling.

The BCO is proud to serve under-resourced community members at every concert through its outreach programs with various community organizations. Your donation dollars make this possible. Our association with social-services groups like Circle of Care and Colorado ArtReach enable under-resourced individuals to experience music firsthand.

If you are a community member who can afford to make an additional donation of $100 or more to help our cause, please consider doing so when you order your season pass.

Thank you!

Proud Owner of a New Harpsichord

Your generous donations to the Harpsichord Fund helped the BCO purchase its first harpsichord! An acknowledgment plaque listing all Golden Key contributors will be installed on the beautiful instrument this summer.

Donations to the Golden Keys fund will also be recognized in the season Concert Program Book. We appreciate all your help and generosity.

The next item to purchase will be a set of timpani!

…But more on that later!

Education and Outreach Events for 2009-2010

We are offering several upcoming initiatives for the community this season. Among these are our youth and educational outreach events, which will include another exciting appearance at the Front Range Community College as well as a special event for kids 14 and under called Paint That Tune, where children will paint their impressions of three types of music on special tiles that will later be collected and framed as a piece of art. Discussions and Q&A sessions with the kids will be educational for all involved!

What You Can Do Next!

The recession has pushed most non-profits to the financial brink, and yet production expenses remain as high as ever. Each of you can pledge to help cover the cost of a specific component of the BCO budget. On average, this is what we spent to bring about a single concert last season:

Musicians' fees $6000.00
Sheet music $300.00
Venue fees $700.00
Advertising $1000.00
Office space, supplies $1000.00
Payroll and operations $6000.00
Total cost per concert $15,000.00

Consider supporting one of these components as a “pet project.” We will make sure your dollars are spent where you want them to be.

Our goals can be achieved only with your continual support and ownership of the BCO organization. Your contributions directly enhance the community in which we live.

Please help!
