JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: BOULDER CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CONCERTMASTER

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in performance (MM, etc.), professional chamber and orchestral experience.

  • Prior concertmaster or principal string experience preferred.

  • Ability to lead collaboratively and communicate effectively with the Music Director, principal players, string sections, and administration.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

 

COMPENSATION

·       Part-time position.

·       Per-service rate: $175–$225, depending on experience and negotiated with BCO.

·       BCO typically offers approximately 30-35 services per season.

  • Qualified applicants will then receive an invitation to submit a link to a single unlisted YouTube video containing all required audition repertoire

Video Submission deadline: October 15th, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

Each excerpt may be recorded separately, then combined into a single video in the order listed and uploaded as an unlisted YouTube link.

  

REQUIRED AUDITION REPERTOIRE

I. Solo Repertoire

  1. First movement exposition of a standard 19th- or 20th-century violin concerto

  2. First movement exposition of Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3, 4, or 5.

 

II. Orchestral Repertoire

A. Concertmaster Solos

All concertmaster solos from:

  1. Bach: St. Matthew Passion, Erbarme Dich, beginning to A (mm. 1-8), pickup to m. 23-m. 26

  2. Haydn Symphony 103, 2nd movement, mm. 85-108

  3. Brahms: Symphony No. 1, 2nd movement Letter E to end

  4. Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade, second- and third-movement solos

B. First Violin Excerpts

  1. Beethoven: Symphony No. 9, third movement, mm. 99–114

  2. Mozart: Symphony No. 39, second movement, mm. 1–19 (no repeat)

  3. Mozart: Symphony No. 39, fourth movement, beginning to B

  4. Prokofiev: Classical Symphony, first movement, beginning to five measures after B

  5. Prokofiev: Classical Symphony, second movement, mm. Beginning to C

  6. Schumann: Symphony No. 2, Scherzo, first page only (with repeat)

  7. Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Scherzo Beginning to 7 after D

 

AUDITION AND SELECTION PROCESS

Up to three candidates will be selected from first-round video auditions to perform a trial concert with BCO during the 2026–27 season. Finalists selected for trial concerts will be compensated at the applicable concertmaster per-service rate for all required rehearsals and performances.

A final decision will follow the trial performances.

All applicants will be notified by email of first-round results by November 1st, 2026.

The successful candidate will be appointed beginning with the 2027-2028 season, subject to a one-season probationary period.
